DRB Scottish Export 80/-

I really try to blog my beers before they are gone, but this one was kind of a surprising exception. I made this beer, along with the West Coast Stout for St. Pat’s day. The last 3 St. Pats days, I made a Scottish, an Amber and a Red.. I decided this… [...]

Last Wednesday’s Drinkabout

When you hear “it got a bit out of hand” or “it jumped up a notch real fast” it could have easily referred to last Wednesday’s marathon of beering. The day started out innocently, as my Wednesdays off usually do, with a couple pints at O’Brien’s whi… [...]

Jolly Pumpkin to Release Biere De Mars Grand Reserve

Jolly Pumpkin will release the Grand Reserve version of their Biere De Mars French Style Stock Ale on Monday April 12th at the cafe in Ann Arbor. The beer was aged on oak for 18 months, and will be available in 330 ml bottles complete with a new label signifying it as Grand Reserve. Total production was around 800 bottles. Information on price and purchase limits are TBD, but should be available soon.

We also hear that there will be a “very special” tap pouring that day, so plan on sticking around the cafe for a pint.

Oh Happy Day #11 – Redhook 8-4-1 Expedition Ale

I love Oh Happy Days…   This time it is a new offering from Redhook in the form of a strong brown ale.  The brown sugar and honey immediately caught my eye and bring to mind thoughts of sweet and syrupy beer goodness… not too much, of course.  Will taste soon and post the results. [...] [...]

Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary – Fritz And Ken’s Ale

A collaboration between Sierra Nevada and Anchor, two breweries I’ve been a little dismissive of (especially since moving to California). Since it’s a stout, I’m hoping it’s not a crazy hop bomb. Classic roasty stout nose, a little coffee, a little ch… [...]

Of Weeds and Stone

So I was watching Netflix last night. A night like most other nights. This week I’m watching season 5 Showtime’s series, Weeds. It’s a great show. Although not as “real” as the first few seasons were, I still enjoying it. ***Spolier Alert***Episod… [...]

Super IPA: Like Taking Purple Sidewalk Chalk to the Tongue, Yum!

This month’s Ale Babe Beer Club was special. I finally was able to make the theme IPA. It took several months of maneuvering, but I ultimately put my foot down and said, “You babies are going to drink IPA and you’re going to like it!” I’m sure you’ve all noticed that over the past couple of years there has been a surge of IPA’s and Double IPA’s in the microbrew market. IPA used to conjure, “Huh?” from most of your fellow beer drinkers. Now, IPA provokes intellectual conversations about IBU. Nonetheless, IPA’s have spun off into their own beer niche… [...]

Why we celebrate Oberon Day

Yesterday was Oberon Day, an official state holiday in Michigan. Lines were out the door at some pubs, and beer stores have artful displays of colorful six-packs with that inviting sun logo. Bell’s Brewery has released our beloved spring/summer brew! But why do we celebrate the release of Oberon? Is it the gorgeous golden-orange color that virtually luminesces? Is it the rocky pure-white head [...]

Dogfish Head Burton Baton

Random tasting notes on the above:Pretty intriguing beer. 10% DIPA meets old ale with some oak aging for one or the other or both. Haven’t exactly researched this. It has elements that are clearly right out of the DFH 90-minute wheelhouse: Sweet, s… [...]

Welcome to the new West Country Ales blog!

Isn’t technology a marvelous thing! I get the chance to do two of my favourite things and make it look like work. Namely, drinking beer….and talking about drinking beer.Well, where to start? I suppose our marvelous governments latest round of taxes. … [...]

Dogfish Head – Aprihop

Today’s review is a special beer for me. It comes to you from Dogfish Head in Milton, Delaware. Aprihop is Dogfish’s “fruit beer for people who hate fruit beers” as Sam Calagione aptly puts it. I first tasted this beer at the Dogfish Head event… [...]

March 2010 ride recap

It ended up being a chilly day, so when we met at the Art Museum, we decided to bail on the picnic idea.  There was 10 of us, and the revised plan was to ride to A Full Plate in Northern Liberties to open some homebrews and eat lunch.  We took a nice slow ride [...] [...]

Change has come to The Beer Snob

Good evening, fellow beer lovers.  When I started this blog in January 2007, it was meant to serve as a way to keep records of beers I’ve tried as well as beers I’ve  loved and beers I’ve hated.  3 years later, I’ve finally m… [...]

Dark Horse Brewing Courted by Canadian Boy Band

Our outlaw brewer friends at Dark Horse had a big dilemma on their hands over the past week, and reached out to the beer geek community for advice. An incredibly popular rock band with platinum level sales is making a video for their new single, and wants to feature Dark Horse’s beer. The product placement would focus on a Dark Horse truck pulling up to a raging fraternity party and offloading all of its beer. I imagine that zany “Animal House” style hi-jinks like Double Crooked Tree beer pong and Tres Blueberry Stout keg stands would ensue.
Sign the contract, watch sales skyrocket, and everything would be cool right?

Not so.

Dark Horse had a few objections, one being that they are not fans of the band. Did I mention their name? Oh yeah, it’s Nickelback, whose current CD release is titled Dark Horse. I’ve never actually met anyone who admitted to liking Nickelback. That, coupled with the fact that they are sometimes forced off stage by people hurling rocks, makes me think that their massive success is some kind of hoax. I know I’m not alone as Brewer Aaron Morse was quoted saying “Why can’t it be some cool band like Slayer?”.

I have rated Nickelback on the Fermentation Nation scale:

My Totally Subjective Unsubstantiated Personal Opinion Rating – 2  (Slightly Better Than a  Chemical Burn Covering 80 % of Your Body)

The brewery posted their decision along with their main reason in this message on  Beeradvocate.com just a few hours ago:

“I just wanted to let everyone know that we did not accept the video offer. At one point I was really on the fence. But after about 22 of your posts we knew for sure it wasn’t gonna happen.I just wanted to wait until today for my own selfish reasons of seeing everyone bash that band. We kinda like “flying under the radar” and that would be the wrong way for us keep flying low.thanks for all the input and all the nice things you say about us. Pints up!”

Gotta respect Dark Horse for having the forward vision to stick to their game plan and not go for the overnight sensation route to success. These guys brew what they believe in, practice what they preach, and let the integrity of the product win people over one at a time.
Slow and steady wins the race!

Upright’s Four Play release..and my 100th post

Last night was the very generous media party at Upright. The occasion was created to release Upright’s newest seasonal, Four Play. I am sure you can read many reviews of it on any PDX blog. It was super tasty, and another feather in Alex’s cap. But… [...]

Review: Michelob Wheat Sample Pack. Hop Hound, Shock Top, Dunkel Weisse, and Honey Wheat Vie for Craft Beer Recognition.

The numbers are in. The pressure is on. Beer sales overall are down, but craft beer sales are up. While craft beer still only holds a 5% market share sales by volume are up 7.2%. It’s time for the majors to take notice if they haven’t already. It seems as though AMC has seen this [...] [...]

Review – Bell’s Porter

Why not launch my first beer review with a nice bold style…Porter. If you have never wandered from light lagers, you are missing out on a whole category of flavor. Afraid of “bitter” beer? No need. This porter is no more bitter than a cup of coffee – actually has some coffee/roasted qualities all its [...] [...]
