Of the several Karl Strauss beers that I’ve received over the years, my least favorite (oddly enough, given my love of them) was a stout. The brewery’s 22nd Anniversary brew was an Imperial Stout that was formed from a blend that included barrel aging nonetheless. How could this not be my favorite of the bunch!? [...] [...]

The first bracket has the #1 seeded Pliny the Younger as well as other strong contenders. The Yeti is a notoriously scarce monster, only emerging from the highlands occasionally to haunt the dreams of small Nepalese children. While its Oak Aged, Chocolate Oak Aged, Espresso Oak Aged, Belgian and classic Imperial Stout siblings may look nicer–rest assured, they’re equally fearsome. This Wednesday, Leap Day, we will be celebrating a rare day with a rare beast. Join Great Divide between [...] [...]

Deep and Dark, this full bodied stout lives up to its name. I thought this might be a dryer stout, but I was pleasantly surprised by its sweetness. A nice malt sweetness balanced by a little bitter oakey, tannin, hop,… [...]
This reminded me today that I had not done my post on Wild Hare. The folks at McGarrah Jessee were kind enough to send me a few bottles to “review.” The beer was good. An almost solid pale ale. Nice bitterness. Easy to drink. It was bit muddy maltwise…. [...]
Mysteriously dark – like a black hole in space – with minimal head, Dark Lord 2009 was impressive. This is the biggest Imperial Stout that I have ever enjoyed. It’s on par for density and richness with Bourbon County Stout…. [...]

Lightning in a Bottle IPA
Last year I brewed up my first really big, hoppy IPA. I stop short of calling it "Imperial" because it was in about the 7-8% range. It was brewed for my good friend Jesse, a hop fanatic and connoisseur of beers featuring the letters IP and A. I brewed ... [...] Read more →

Craft beer lovers in Mississippi took one step closer to higher-alcohol beer Monday with passage of Senate Bill 2878, which would raise the alcohol-by-weight limit from 5% to 8% in beer. The bill, which has been pushed by grassroots group Raise Your Pints as well as Anheuser-Busch and its independent distributors in Mississippi, passed the [...] [...] Read more →

Not drinkable, but edible…
Coors Light is always promoting its coldness in commercials--you know, the Silver Bullet Train that roars through wherever, or the label that changes color when it's cold enough. What the commercial doesn't say is that the colder a beer is, the less you can actually taste of it, which, in the case of Coors Light, may be a blessing. The article below doesn't say whether the guy who survived by " [...] Read more →
