#232 Independent Liquor – Carlsberg

Name: Carlsberg Brewery: Independent Brewery (Auckland, NZ) Style: Pale Lager ABV: 4.6% Source:  Flatmate I know my descriptions of pale lagers are nearly all the same, but I’m pretty sure this was noticeably more boring than the rest. How do you open yours?

I’ve got the simple but essential task of bottle opening pretty much covered. With the magnetic opener stuck to the fridge door, the keyring opener for when i’m out and about and the top of the corkscrew when there’s wine and beer to opened i’ve got all bases covered. There’s even the Aidan Moffat, Little [...] [...]

The episode you hoped you’d never have to watch. The beer men, in bed. Together. Drinking craft beer. Maybe this is one to watch with eyes closed and mouth open (Warning: features awesome Epic Brewing beer from NZ). [...]

Wellington in a Pint

We’re a pretty sceptical bunch here at Australian Brews News and when I saw that NZ advertising agency Clemenger was behind a project top create the beer that best describes Wellington, I could see cynical marketing ploy written all over it. But as with most good conspiracy theories, our scepticism didn’t bear up to much scrutiny. With names like Yeastie Boys, Tuatara and Parrot Dog involved, and Cryer Malt’s David Cryer telling us how ‘into beer’ the Clemenger boys and girls are, I had to unsaddle the high horse and lead it back into the stable. Below is the Yeastie Boy’s take on the project. It’s great to see creative advertising minds looking at ways to celebrate the best aspects of beer and enhancing its credibility, rather than  reinforcing its reputation as being only the drink of choice for unshaven blokes on men-only fishing trips. With this sort of thing happening on both sides of the Tasman, things are looking good for interesting beer. Wellington in a Pint For the last few months we have been working on a very exciting project with Wellington advertising agency Clemenger BBDO.  Wellington in a Pint was officially launched with a significant hiss and [...] [...]

Moa Imperial Stout | Chad’z Beer Reviews

Whoah, two collab reviews with http://youtube.com/jjrudy41 of imperial stouts we got in trades IN A ROW?! Yup. Jay got this beer in a trade with a fan from all the way in New Zealand! But that’s not all, we specifically reviewed this beer on a Wednesday night because we were being photographed and interviewed by one of our local newspapers for a feature story that should be out soon. We were so excited we could care less about this special beer (nah, just kidding!).

3.9

   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 5/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 5/5   OVERALL 14/20

Chad9976 (636) – Albany, New York, USA – MAR 28, 2012

From the bottle presentation, the fact this is from a country whose beer I’ve never tried, and considering that it weighs in at 10.2% ABV, Moa Imperial Stout wasn’t anything radical or unique. Unless you consider a beer this big relatively mild and well-balanced a unique thing.

A friend of mine received a 375ml corked and caged bottle in a trade with a fan from New Zealand. We split it and each poured it into tulip glasses.

Appearance: Completely opaque black body with no other visible colors; forms a surprisingly large dark tan frothy head which retains and laces very well.

Smell: Mild nose with red grape scents; chocolate syrup, and a hint of black licorice.

Taste: The beer begins with a relatively sweet taste up front – reminiscent of a typical milk or oatmeal stout. But unlike a lot of other beers of the sort, the palate to Moa Imperial Stout doesn’t change on a dime, but is a gradual transition to something bolder. There’s a subtle tanginess of red wine which gives way to milk chocolate and eventually dark chocolate. We drank this noticeably warm and it wasn’t all that bitter until we got to the last few sips. There doesn’t seem to be much coffee taste per se, but the dry bitterness is there. It’s noticeable in the aftertaste but easily tolerable. The label indicates the beer was aged in Pinot Noir barrels which imparts that subtle fruit and sour flavor, but not real woody or earthy taste. In the end it’s a satisfying brew although it seems like more could’ve been done.

Drinkability: Since this was a corked bottle that’s also bottle-conditioned I was expecting Moa Imperial Stout to be quite lively, but it’s just the opposite. The mouthfeel is a little thin and flat, although the head does give it a slightly creamy texture. It goes down remarkably smooth and has almost no density or friction even though it’s pretty big at 10.2% ABV. Even though I only drank about 6oz I didn’t feel it at all. In fact, which I was drinking it I was wondering if this wasn’t something closer to 5 or 6% that had been mistakenly labeled. Those who are new to imperial stouts would do well to give this one a try.

#230 Wanaka Beerworks – Lady

Name: The Lady Brewery: Wanaka Beerworks Style: Cherry wheat beer ABV: 5.5% Source: Victoria Park new World I have never in my life bought a porn magazine, but now I think I might know what it feels like to do so. I lingered around the beer fridge at Vic Park New World for a good [...] [...]

#228 McCashin – Stoke Bomber Bohemian Ale

Name: Stoke Bomber – Bohemian Ale Brewery: Mccashin Family Brewery (Nelson, NZ) Style: Golden Ale ABV: 5.3% Source: Rakinos (Auckland) Bah, humbug! I don’t mean to sound like a grumpy old scrooge, but this beer was almost completely ruined for me by the fact that it cost a whopping $22.  It’s not Stoke’s fault – I see [...] [...]

#227 Beat Brewing – Barley Wine

8° Sunburnt Irish Red

#223 Lion Nathan – Stella Artois

Name: Stella Artois Brewery: Lion Nathan (NZ) Style: Pale Lager ABV: 5.2% Source: The campervan As you might have noticed, I’ve been motoring my way, rather inelegantly, through the mass-produced pale lagers recently. I say ‘inelegantly’ because each post is kind of lazy. I say something along the lines of: “It tastes fizzy, watery, of [...] [...]

Review: Steinlager Pure (New Zealand)

As you know about me, I’m not a fan of lagers. I’ll still drink lagers. Heck, for a long period of time, my beer of choice was Lucky Extra. However, after hearing several people, including one of the staff of the local LC raving about Steinlager Pure… [...]

A tale of two hemispheres

Hops, as with all herbs, suffer from age. Those volatile compounds which make up the wonderful aromas are escaping all of the time and being lost at every stage of the process; from being disturbed on picking and drying, to being compressed on packing… [...]

#215 Lion Nathan – Steinlager Classic

Name: Steinlager Classic Brewery: Lion Breweries (Lion Nathan Co.)
